Do I Really Need Braces and How Do They Really Work?

So you have gone to your dentist or your child’s dentist, and they are recommending that you get braces. You may be wondering, do I, or my child, really need braces? You may think that a few misaligned teeth are “not that big of a deal”. It is understandable since having braces is not only costly but also can be uncomfortable for the one wearing them. But, before you decide to pass on them completely, here are a few things to consider.

With just a few teeth that are misaligned, you increase the risk of decay to your teeth because you are not able to floss them correctly or get to the entire surface of each tooth when you brush. Your risk of periodontal disease, which can destroy the bone of the jaw and cause tooth loss, increases once this decay begins. You may also experience difficulty chewing food properly, affecting your overall health and wellness. Do you experience sleep apnea? This could also be caused by your misalignment and can lead to other diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

It may help to better understand exactly how braces work. Once they are applied, they will deliver a gentle and constant pressure which will slowly move the teeth into their proper position. Braces are available in several different options such as:

Stainless steel or ceramic: These brackets are placed onto the teeth and a wire is then attached to each bracket. Each mouth is different and some will require the additional assistance of rubber bands to get the teeth into the correct position.

Lingual braces: These are similar to traditional braces but are actually mounted on the inside of the teeth vs the outside.

Invisalign: This is becoming a very popular option, especially with adult patients. Invisalign is a custom-made clear plastic aligner that fits over the patient’s teeth and is removable.

Whatever the reason you are looking to get braces, whether, for health or cosmetic reasons, we suggest you speak with an orthodontist and learn about your options. No two mouths are the same and a one size fits all correction does not work.
